LIGHTING DESIGNER & PRODUCTION MANAGER

NEW DIORAMA THEATRE, JAN 2020

HOLY WHAT THEATRE

The war is over. The dead have been buried. The traitors have been punished. People feel more alive than they have in a long time. They are ready to start again. But Antigone is not. She will not move on, and she will not forget. She will drag everyone back if she has to.

Lulu Raczka’s searing adaptation hands the reins of Sophocles’ classic text to the young sisters at the heart of the play creating something messy, irreverent and vital.

Reviews

“Pidsley’s assured production uses sound and light to terrific effect. At one moment everything changes, and the world really does tilt. Or at least the lighting rig does.”

Lyn Gardner, Stage Door

“Holy What Theatre company is definitely one to watch in the future for more of the same exciting, innovative and enduring theatre.”

Niamh Flynn, Upper-Circle ★★★★

“Lighting (Tim Kelly) and sound (Kieran Lucas), both deceptively simple, play almost as much of a role in this production as the script. Lucas’ score artfully navigates between low ominous rumbles, thumping soundscapes and noughties R&B. Kelly’s lighting is similarly emotionally calculating and playful, amping up the drama.”

★★★★★ Miriam Sallon, Spy In the Stalls,

“The contrasts between noise and silence in Kieran Lucas’s sound design are highly effective: a humming drone becomes its own doom-laden chorus, while Tim Kelly’s use of light and darkness is just as striking.”

★★★★ Arifa Akbar, The Guardian,

“Set, light and sound design all work powerfully together to amplify the overall impact of the story.  It is evident Pidsley and Razcka share a clear vision, as it has been intricately realised in this production.”

Stephanie Ressort, View From The Outside

“When Antigone leaves to commit the illegal act, it's a visually powerful moment that shows you the gravitas of her decision. Antigone dashes to the side of the stage, yanking the pulley holding up the lighting rig (Tim Kelly). The now slanted lights flicker dangerously, and suddenly our perspective is shifted from one concentrated within the house to one unfamiliar and strange.”

★★★★  Nicole Acquah, Whats On Stage,

“Antigone runs at an intense 85 minutes straight through, with strong lighting design (by Tim Kelly) and a constant low level sound of music and effects, from the pounding of club DJs to police sirens (designed by Kieran Lucas). It all builds to a full concentration on the girls as they almost dare each other onto a path from which there is no way out.”

Louise Penn, LouReviews,

“Even at first preview, Antigone  @holywhattheatre @newdiorama is a scorchingly assured piece of work. Pit-of-the-stomach stuff by actors, director, designers and especially Lulu Raczka's text.”
