Reviews

“Kieran Lucas’ sound design trips from a disquieting heartbeat as a miscarriage is described to quirky interludes as Williams – centred by Timothy Kelly’s gentle lighting – battles the demands of her newborn.

The result is a startling and often funny demonstration of the eternal and, yes, universal difficulty of trying to feel whole in a complex world.”

Sally Fields, The Stage

“The changes in tone are swift – made seamless by flawless lighting design (Timothy Kelly) – and the piece touches on the darker and most painful moments of pregnancy and parenthood.”

HOLY WHAT THEATRE

The war is over. The dead have been buried. The traitors have been punished. People feel more alive than they have in a long time. They are ready to start again. But Antigone is not. She will not move on, and she will not forget. She will drag everyone back if she has to.

Lulu Raczka’s searing adaptation hands the reins of Sophocles’ classic text to the young sisters at the heart of the play creating something messy, irreverent and vital.

Reviews

“Pidsley’s assured production uses sound and light to terrific effect. At one moment everything changes, and the world really does tilt. Or at least the lighting rig does.”

Lyn Gardner, Stage Door

“Holy What Theatre company is definitely one to watch in the future for more of the same exciting, innovative and enduring theatre.”

Niamh Flynn, Upper-Circle ★★★★

“Lighting (Tim Kelly) and sound (Kieran Lucas), both deceptively simple, play almost as much of a role in this production as the script. Lucas’ score artfully navigates between low ominous rumbles, thumping soundscapes and noughties R&B. Kelly’s lighting is similarly emotionally calculating and playful, amping up the drama.”

★★★★★ Miriam Sallon, Spy In the Stalls,

“The contrasts between noise and silence in Kieran Lucas’s sound design are highly effective: a humming drone becomes its own doom-laden chorus, while Tim Kelly’s use of light and darkness is just as striking.”

★★★★ Arifa Akbar, The Guardian,

“Set, light and sound design all work powerfully together to amplify the overall impact of the story.  It is evident Pidsley and Razcka share a clear vision, as it has been intricately realised in this production.”

Stephanie Ressort, View From The Outside

“When Antigone leaves to commit the illegal act, it's a visually powerful moment that shows you the gravitas of her decision. Antigone dashes to the side of the stage, yanking the pulley holding up the lighting rig (Tim Kelly). The now slanted lights flicker dangerously, and suddenly our perspective is shifted from one concentrated within the house to one unfamiliar and strange.”

★★★★  Nicole Acquah, Whats On Stage,

“Antigone runs at an intense 85 minutes straight through, with strong lighting design (by Tim Kelly) and a constant low level sound of music and effects, from the pounding of club DJs to police sirens (designed by Kieran Lucas). It all builds to a full concentration on the girls as they almost dare each other onto a path from which there is no way out.”

Louise Penn, LouReviews,

“Even at first preview, Antigone  @holywhattheatre @newdiorama is a scorchingly assured piece of work. Pit-of-the-stomach stuff by actors, director, designers and especially Lulu Raczka's text.”

"These four performers are some of the bravest, boldest, most candid and risk-taking on the contemporary London theatre scene. Due credit must also be given to director Liselle Terret and dramaturg Lou Cope for their meticulous work, curating highly emotive and genuinely provocative content from the devising process, and balancing the show’s sorrows and joys with such finesse.

The message of Not F**kin Sorry is crystalline, and cannot be put better than when Selwyn declares, “We are sick of being your circus dogs. Everything you think we can’t do, we can. And we are not fucking sorry."

"I enjoyed the physical representation using modern art of Oliver Lansleys personal physical struggle with mental health. You could almost feel the tugging. He could break free for a moment but then the tugging, the grip, the force, was back. The overuse of lights, sharp pitched noises, the darkness, the light, the tapping and everything in between portrayed brilliantly how a person going through depression and anxiety may be feeling."

THE BUNKER THEATRE, SEPTEMBER 2019

THE CAVERN, VAULT FESTIVAL 2019

VIEW FROM HERE

A punchy and hot-headed show exploring the dark, toxic and tumultuous friendship of two lads in east Belfast.

Sas and Monty are trapped in this place and in their heads. Their friendship orbits around a  damaging and violent event from their pasts. Their imaginative and playful ‘game’ is the only way they can process the mess they feel inside.

Developed with support from Department of Foreign Affairs (Ireland), Jerwood Foundation and EastSide Arts Belfast.

Photos from The Bunker (by Ali Wright)

"there is something undeniably powerful in this story [..] Barry Calvert and Brendan Quinn are both terrific, like two belligerent fighters unknowingly revealing their vulnerable spot, as they dance around Timothy Kelly’s simple boxing ring design which is a kind of trap"

Lyn Gardner

“Visually, one of the most striking things about Jade City is the ‘boxing ring’ set-up. At a subliminal level it makes sense, but an aftershow talk with play’s creative team confirms that ‘the ring’ reflects the sort of communal places that lads like Monty and Sas would have frequented during their formative years. Perhaps more pertinently, for set designer Timothy Kelly, it symbolizes the boundaries of masculinity established by society, which far from being liberating, keeps Sas and Monty ‘boxed in’ when confronting questions about what does it really mean to be a ‘man’ – what CAN and what SHOULD they do. On a seperate note, the performances are also captioned, which obliquely brings the audience’s attention to the innate rhythm and nuances of the language, what is said – and what isn’t…”

Breaking the Fourth Wall

“To ensure we don’t miss a word, captions are used throughout – and while these are certainly helpful at times for deciphering the characters’ Northern Irish accents, their inclusion feels as symbolic as it is practical: you get the sense that Sas and Monty are merely acting out a story that’s been written for them, and which for any good intentions they might have, can’t now be avoided.”

Jessie's sick of Leeds.
A city she thought she would never leave.
But the aimlessness of the people
she once believed she would always need
is suffocating.

Wondering whether she's had enough,
in a dirty nightclub not too far off,
Jessie's blinded by the light of Allie Touch,
a singer song-writer with a taste for big ambitions,
amongst some other stuff.

Feeling rough in the five in the morning sunlight,
Jessie's sight is fixed on the path that Allie lights
And like a moth to a flame in the night,

WILDCARD

Yasmin Sidhu and Casey Smith are best friends. At 17 the world as they know it is soon about to change. Yasmin will be off to University, a good one - to do maths. And Casey, well Casey needs to figure out what on earth it is she wants to be. She’s heard you can make a living doing makeup tutorials on insta, and nobody can contour like Casey.

In their small town in the midlands these two girls have grown up wildly different, thats what makes their friendship so strong, so deep. So when a video of Yasmin goes viral, everyone is shocked that it is her that is breaking the internet and not Casey.
'17' is a look at what it's like being a teenager now: trying things, learning stuff, failing, succeeding, heartbreak, expectations and shame. At 17 your world isn't just home, school and maybe further maths club, with the internet watching and recording and repeating your actions, your choices are there for everyone to see and for everyone to have an opinion on.
This lyrical play will throw you back into those unsteady days of 17.

[…] a raw, refreshing play that will resonate with everyone and anyone who had issues in their teens. It is fun but with a serrated edge."

CloseUp Culture (★★★★)

“A highlight of the piece [is the] projection of a social media timeline, with the actor’s forensic treatment of it as a timeline of criminal events, as if on a detective mission.”

Voice Mag (★★★★)

“A timeline of events is played out on the back wall through social media posts that spell out the girls’ pressures and priorities quite clearly. The cartoons used in place of photos heighten their sense of detachment from their real lives. Watching it play out and take hold of these impressionable young minds makes this a tough watch. We may not be 17 anymore, but do we really know any better?”

The Play’s The Thing

“A promising two-hander about teenage friendship, sex and social media”

The Stage

17. is not one to be missed, as the message is clear and important and provides a voice for all young women who have ever felt attacked, pressured and victimized through the ever-changing world of social media.”

SIRENS (2018)

SIRENS (2018)

[This is Sirens 1.0, the original version of Sirens that we have since redeveloped into a brad new show.]

PROJECTION AND LIGHTING DESIGNER AND PRODUCTION MANAGER

EDINBURGH FRINGE / GREENWICH THEATRE / UK TOUR (SUMMER / AUTUMN 2018)

ZOO CO

You're an immortal demi-goddess whose only job is to sing and look beautiful. No, this isn't a show about Beyoncé.

Three Greek sirens find themselves washed up on Hastings beach. It's 2018, and sitting around naked on rocks is no longer en vogue. But the sirens are still cursed: any man who hears their voice dies instantly.

It's a bit of a drag.

Award-winning Zoo Co returns to stick two fingers up at gender expectations with their trademark visual storytelling, and stunning projections. Sirens is creatively captioned and BSL inclusive.

WINNER OF A THREEWEEKS EDITORS' AWARD 2018

"a bold, unconventional show that will leave you wanting to raise your voice just a little louder"

ThreeWeeks (★★★★★)

"Timothy Kelly’s projections are a delight, both facilitating access for D/deaf and hard of hearing audience members and supporting the narrative in clever and amusing ways."

Fringe Review (RECOMMENDED SHOW)

"Sirens is a fist-pumping feel-good display of girl power, and a triumph of silent and silenced voices. With a fierce feminist message, this isn’t a cry for freedom, this is a collective roar of liberation."

Deadline (★★★★)

"Sirens is a thought-provoking, and genuinely entertaining look at the unfortunate durability of gender-expectation for women"

Arthur's Seat (★★★★)

"Spunky and fun with a graphic novel aesthetic and approach to storytelling. [..] All speech is captioned, BSL is heavily used and all performances are relaxed, giving the show a wonderfully welcoming feel. The DIY design style (with excellent projections) that could give the production an amateurish feel instead ties in with their inclusiveness."
